The San Francisco 49ers have signed outside linebacker Khalid Kareem off the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad as they prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. Kareem, a former draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, is 28 years old and has spent the last two seasons with the Falcons.

Kareem's signing comes in response to the 49ers' need for additional depth on their defensive line, particularly after defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu was ruled out for the game due to a foot injury sustained during practice. Initially listed as questionable, Okuayinonu did not travel with the team to Melbourne.

The 49ers' defensive line was already facing challenges, as star edge rusher Nick Bosa is recovering from an ACL tear and dealing with knee tendinitis, while 2026 third-round pick Romello Height is also sidelined with an ankle injury. The only healthy defensive end available is Keion White.

Khalid Kareem, who stands 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 268 pounds, has primarily played along the defensive line throughout his six-year NFL career. He has played in a total of six games over the past two seasons, recording 11 tackles. His career totals include 41 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack.

Kareem is familiar with the 49ers' system, having played under defensive coordinator Raheem Morris during his time with the Falcons. Morris has a preference for defenders with long wingspans, and Kareem fits that profile with a wingspan of seven feet. This familiarity may aid in Kareem's integration into the 49ers' defense as they head into the season opener.
