Zack Gelof was in the middle of both decisive swings Friday night in Seattle: the four-homer third inning that flipped the game, and the fifth-inning triple that broke a tie for good.
The Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 7-6 at T-Mobile Park, winning their third straight for the first time since early June, the Associated Press reported. StatPro's box lists Gelof with five at-bats, two runs, two hits, a triple, a home run, two RBI, and a strikeout.
The final was 7-6 - not the 7-4 result from Thursday's meeting that some boards still surface when the date is off by a day.
Four homers, one inning
The third inning was a parade. Max Muncy led off the barrage with his eighth homer. Jordan Williams followed with his fourth.
After a walk to Brennan Bolte, Jeff McNeil launched his eighth, making it 4-2. Gelof then went deep for his 17th, stretching the lead to 5-2. The AP noted it was only the second time this season an MLB team has hit four home runs in an inning, after Cincinnati did it on July 8.
Seattle answered before the inning closed. Cal Raleigh's two-run homer, his 21st, tied the game at 5-5 and briefly erased everything the Athletics had just built. Logan Gilbert (11-9) was charged with all seven Athletics runs over 4.2 innings with 10 strikeouts. The AP said Gilbert reached 1,000 innings pitched with Seattle in the outing.
Gelof's triple resets the night
The Athletics did not stay knotted for long. In the fifth, Williams walked, stole second, and scored when Gelof ripped a triple. Lawrence Butler followed with an RBI single, pushing the visitors ahead 7-5. Hogan Harris later recorded his 15th save. Josh Naylor finished with three hits, including an RBI in the eighth, and Raleigh scored three times in a losing effort.
Brady Basso (1-2) earned the win in relief. He entered with two outs in Seattle's three-run third and threw three scoreless innings for his third career victory, per the AP. Muncy added three hits overall. The Athletics' lineup finally strung power and speed in the same game after weeks of quiet stretches.
Wild-card pressure on the home side
Seattle fell to 66-76, seven games behind Houston in the AL West and six back of Cleveland for the final wild-card spot, the AP reported. A one-run home loss to a club that had not won three in a row since early June is the kind of September result that shortens the math quickly.
Saturday's matchup sends George Kirby (9-10, 4.19 ERA) to the mound for the Mariners against Jeffrey Springs (3-13, 6.37) for the Athletics. Gelof's homer-and-triple combination gave Oakland the template: stack the long ball early, then manufacture the go-ahead run when the lead disappears. Seattle has to answer that twice in 24 hours if it wants the series back.
