Breakthrough Inning

John Rave provided the decisive offensive spark for the Kansas City Royals, hitting a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning that turned a one-run deficit into a four-run advantage. The play came with two runners on base, sending Tolbert, Witt Jr., and Isbel home to give Kansas City a commanding lead.

Rave’s double was part of a five-run eighth-inning rally that proved too much for the Athletics’ pitching staff. Before Rave’s hit, the Royals had chipped away at the lead with singles from Pasquantino and Isbel, along with a sacrifice fly by Collins that scored Perez. Garcia then added an insurance run with a single to right field, scoring Rave.

Prior to the explosion in the eighth, the game was tightly contested. The Athletics took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on singles from Bolte and Gelof. Kansas City responded in the fourth when Perez doubled to center, driving in Pasquantino.

The Royals took their first lead in the fifth inning thanks to a series of hits by McNeil, who singled twice, and Bolte, who also singled. McNeil’s second hit scored Muncy, and Gelof’s groundout brought Bolte home.

Pitching Performances

Seth Lugo started for Kansas City, pitching six innings and allowing five earned runs on nine hits while striking out three batters. He received support from the bullpen, where Alex Lange and Craig Kimbrel each pitched scoreless innings. Kimbrel secured the win, his second of the season, by retiring the side in order with two strikeouts.

The Athletics’ starting pitcher, Jeffrey Springs, lasted 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out one. He was relieved by Scott Blewett, who recorded a hit but no earned runs, and Elvis Alvarado, who pitched a perfect inning.

The turning point came when Hayden Juenger entered the game and allowed three earned runs in his brief appearance before Drew Rom took the mound.

Rom struggled significantly, yielding four earned runs on three hits and two walks over one inning, including the five-run eighth that ended the contest. Steven Cruz finished for Kansas City but gave up two earned runs on two hits in the ninth.

Final Score and Records

Muncy added a two-run home run to center field in the ninth inning, extending the Royals’ lead to 9-7 before the final out was recorded. The game was played at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, with an attendance of 11,579.

With the victory, the Kansas City Royals improved their record to 54-74. The Athletics fell to 49-78 on the season.
