Katherine Breed, an endurance swimmer from Pleasanton, is preparing to launch "Swim California," a first-of-its-kind expedition to traverse the state's entire coastline. The journey, estimated at roughly 900 miles, is scheduled to begin on July 1, with July 2 as a potential alternative start date.
Breed plans to swim approximately five hours daily, covering 10 to 15 miles, typically during early morning hours to avoid stronger winds. She will wear a wetsuit for protection against cold, sun, and jellyfish, marking a change from her previous long-distance swims that adhered to English Channel regulations. A 52-foot support vessel will accompany her, with the team expecting to dock regularly, except in areas like the Lost Coast and Big Sur where harbors are unavailable.
The swimmer stated the mission aims to highlight ocean conservation issues and coastal community challenges. She also founded a nonprofit to encourage women and girls to engage with the ocean. While sharks are a common concern, Breed identified weather, storms, and fishing gear as greater risks. The expedition has been in planning for over three years and is expected to last at least three months, though weather may extend the timeline.
