George Kittle, the tight end for the San Francisco 49ers, expressed optimism regarding his recovery from a torn Achilles sustained in January. Speaking to reporters, Kittle stated that he believes he has a chance to play in the team's Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, which would be just shy of eight months post-injury.
Kittle mentioned that he is currently running at top speeds and is eager to return to practice in pads. He emphasized the importance of checking off recovery milestones and avoiding any setbacks. However, the timing of the game poses a challenge, as the 49ers will be traveling to Australia shortly before the game, which may accelerate the decision-making process regarding his participation.
A determination on Kittle's status is expected to be made before the team's departure for Australia. If he is not cleared to play, he will not accompany the team on the trip.
Should Kittle not be ready for the opener, he indicated that he could return in the early weeks of the season, with the 49ers' next game scheduled for September 20 against the Miami Dolphins.
Kittle's injury occurred during the wild-card round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was carted off the field and later diagnosed with a season-ending Achilles tear. While recovery from Achilles injuries can be quicker than from ACL tears, returning to pre-injury form can be challenging, particularly as Kittle approaches his 33rd birthday in October.
