The Los Angeles Chargers have finalized their 53-man roster and made several adjustments to their practice squad following roster cutdown day, which has led to some confusion regarding their decisions.

One notable move involved edge rusher Kyle Kennard, who was waived with an injury designation. This means he was subject to the waiver system, allowing other teams to claim him. Since Kennard went unclaimed, he reverted back to the Chargers' injured reserve list. If he and the team do not negotiate an injury settlement, he will remain on injured reserve for the entire 2026 season.

Another significant decision was the designation of Scott Matlock to return from injured reserve. Matlock, who was seen in a walking boot after the preseason game against the 49ers, may not have made the final roster but was given this designation to keep options open.

If he had been waived with an injury designation, he would have been ineligible to re-sign with the team for an extended period.

Additionally, linebacker Denzel Perryman was placed on injured reserve, which opened a roster spot for the Chargers. The team had previously released punter JK Scott, but reports indicated that this move was temporary. By releasing Scott, the Chargers were able to create an extra roster spot, allowing them to place Perryman on injured reserve while still retaining Scott.

The NFL allows teams to designate a limited number of players for return from injured reserve each season. The Chargers had already utilized their two slots before roster cutdowns, making the maneuver with Scott necessary to manage their roster effectively. Further details on the implications of these moves are not yet clear.
