The Los Angeles Chargers are preparing to make challenging roster decisions as they finalize their 53-man lineup ahead of the upcoming cutdown day. Among the most difficult choices will be determining the last linebacker position, with six players expected to secure their spots: Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, Daiyan Henley, Denzel Perryman, Akheem Mesidor, and Kyle Kennard.

If all seven linebackers are included, only three additional linebacker positions will be available. This situation leaves Junior Colson, Troy Dye, Marlowe Wax, Del'Shawn Phillips, and Nadame Tucker vying for the remaining spots. Given the projected inclusion of five outside linebackers, it is likely that the final positions will be filled by inside linebackers who can contribute on special teams.

Junior Colson, who was drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, may find himself in a precarious position. Although he showcased his potential with an interception return for a touchdown in the preseason, injuries and inconsistent performance have hindered his development.

ESPN's Kris Rhim suggests that Dye, Wax, and Phillips are likely to secure the last three linebacker roles, leaving Colson at risk of being cut.

Marlowe Wax has impressed during training camp, potentially giving him an edge over Colson. The decision to cut Colson would reflect a tough acknowledgment of a recent draft investment that has not panned out, particularly given his connection to head coach Jim Harbaugh from their time at Michigan.

Harbaugh's familiarity with Colson should not dictate the outcome, as the Chargers aim to build a competitive roster. The final decision will likely hinge on special teams contributions, player health, and the likelihood of each player clearing waivers if cut. While Colson entered training camp with a stronger background, Wax's performance may lead to a more compelling case for the final linebacker spot.
