The Los Angeles Chargers did not resolve any of their ongoing position battles after their 27-7 victory against the Houston Texans in their preseason opener. Head coach Jim Harbaugh noted that competition remains intense as the team returned to practice following the game.

With the deadline for setting the initial 53-man roster approaching on August 30, the Chargers have seven training camp practices, a scrimmage against the San Francisco 49ers, and additional preseason games against the 49ers and Rams to finalize their personnel decisions.

The offensive line has been a focal point, particularly the left guard position, as general manager Joe Hortiz has made several changes since March. Rookies Travis Burke, Jake Slaughter, and Logan Taylor filled key roles on the line, with Burke receiving specific praise from Harbaugh for his effort and performance during the game.

The coaching staff faces a decision on whether to keep nine or as many as 11 offensive linemen on the roster. The competition for the backup quarterback position also intensified, with Trey Lance starting and leading the team to a 13-7 lead before DJ Uiagalelei took over and directed two touchdown drives, including a scoring pass to rookie Devonte Ross.

Defensively, the Chargers allowed only one touchdown and limited the Texans to 98 passing yards and 111 rushing yards. Rookie outside linebacker Akheem Mesidor made a strong impression despite limited playtime, earning high marks for his effort and technique.

Left tackle Rashawn Slater missed his fifth consecutive practice as he continues to recover from a knee injury that kept him out for all of last season. Further details regarding his status were not provided.
