The Los Angeles Chargers have continued their trend of reunions under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel by signing wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. to their practice squad. This move follows previous acquisitions aimed at integrating players familiar with McDaniel's system, including fullback Alec Ingold and guard Cole Strange, who both previously played for the Miami Dolphins.
Wease, an undrafted free agent in 2025, spent last season with the Dolphins and appeared in one game, where he scored on a 63-yard play. However, he primarily remained on the practice squad and did not make the final roster after a coaching change in Miami. His signing with the Chargers suggests a continued connection with McDaniel's coaching staff.
Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 210 pounds, Wease provides the Chargers with depth at the wide receiver position, especially as they navigate injuries affecting players like Ladd McConkey. Currently, Wease is one of just two receivers on the practice squad, alongside others who are on injured reserve.
This addition may also indicate a longer-term strategy for the Chargers. Should recent draft picks like Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith not develop as expected, or if Quentin Johnston is not retained after this season, having players familiar with McDaniel's system could be beneficial.
