Gracen Halton, a rookie defensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, is making a notable impact at training camp with his energetic presence and impressive performance on the field. Known for his vocal enthusiasm, Halton's celebrations often follow his successful plays, which have become a highlight for his teammates and even opponents.
During a recent practice, Halton showcased his skills by winning a one-on-one drill, prompting veteran tackle Trent Williams, a fellow University of Oklahoma alum, to offer him a handshake and encouragement. Williams praised Halton's explosive quickness and power, comparing him to former 49ers player D.J. Jones, who is now with the Denver Broncos.
Halton's physicality is underscored by his impressive 40-yard dash time of 4.82 seconds, a notable feat for a player weighing nearly 300 pounds.
In a preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans, Halton demonstrated his capabilities by sacking quarterback Cam Ward and stopping running back Tyjae Spears for a loss on consecutive plays, although the sack was negated by a penalty.
Halton has been eager to make up for lost time after suffering a hyperextended knee injury at the beginning of training camp, which sidelined him for the first week. Upon his return, he quickly made his presence felt in practice.
Halton likens his approach to that of a lion hunting for prey, stating, "That’s what I like to do. I imagine myself as a lion going out to get the gazelle."
In addition to Halton's standout performance, the practice also saw receivers Mike Evans and Jacob Cowing returning from injuries. Cowing notably caught a deep pass from quarterback Mac Jones, contributing to an offensive highlight. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy connected with tight end Luke Farrell in a move-the-ball session, although the play was nullified due to a sack by Osa Odighizuwa.
