Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay stated that the team's backup quarterback position remains undecided as they approach the regular season. According to Benjamin Royer of The Orange County Register, McVay has not confirmed whether Ty Simpson or Stetson Bennett will serve as the backup to starter Matthew Stafford.
In the recent preseason game against New Orleans, Simpson played behind Bennett, completing eight out of twelve passes for 73 yards, along with three rushing attempts for ten yards. In contrast, Bennett had a strong performance, hitting 19 of 31 passes for 181 yards and scoring two rushing touchdowns.
Despite Bennett's impressive showing, McVay emphasized that he is taking a cautious approach to the decision-making process, stating he is "taking things a day at a time." On Monday, Bennett received more second-team practice reps than Simpson, which may indicate a favorable position for Bennett in the competition.
McVay confirmed that Simpson will definitely participate in the upcoming preseason finale against the Chargers. However, he did not commit to whether Bennett would also play, suggesting that the team is still evaluating their options for the backup quarterback role as the season approaches.
