San Jose State University is currently in training camp, focusing on improving its defense after a challenging 2025 season where they ranked 115th nationally in passing defense. The Spartans have made significant changes during the offseason, including hiring a new defensive coordinator and bringing in additional coaches and players to address these issues.
Bojay Filimoeatu has been appointed as the first-year defensive coordinator following a brief interim period at the end of last season. He succeeded Derrick Odum, who was let go after nine years with the program. Filimoeatu has built a veteran coaching staff, including Brian Norwood as the defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, and Joe Dale as the safeties coach.
Coach Ken Niumatalolo expressed confidence in his staff, particularly praising Norwood's expertise and Dale's coaching abilities.
Norwood, who has experience at UCLA, TCU, and Kansas State, is tasked with revitalizing the secondary. Senior cornerback Caleb Womack noted that Norwood's diverse knowledge and new techniques are beneficial for the team. Norwood stated that the players are receptive to the new coaching methods, which differ from what they have previously experienced.
The cornerback unit is undergoing a transformation, with only four returning players who have limited starting experience, alongside five new transfers. Notably, Isaiah Buxton, a former backup at San Diego State, has joined the team. Niumatalolo highlighted the competitive environment in the cornerback position, with multiple players vying for playing time.
