Shay Whitcomb's third homer of the season left Oracle Park to left-center and made it 6-2.
ESPN's scoring play measured the sixth-inning drive at 410 feet. Christian Koss scored ahead of him. Julian Garcia was the pitcher. CBS Sports' box lists Whitcomb 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a double, the homer, and two strikeouts as the San Francisco Giants' second baseman. After the game he was hitting .147/.171/.441. Both of his RBI came with two outs.
The Associated Press named Whitcomb's homer as one of three two-run shots San Francisco hit Wednesday, along with Jonah Cox in the second and Rafael Devers in the fifth. Devers, the AP noted, homered in all three games of the series. The Giants still lost 10-9 when Cincinnati scored seven times in the ninth.
A double, then Cox, then the 410-foot ball
Whitcomb's first hit had come in the second. CBS Sports' play-by-play has him doubling to deep left off Nick Lodolo. Cox followed with a homer to center, 421 feet on ESPN's scoring play, and Whitcomb scored for a 2-1 lead.
He struck out swinging in the fourth. In the sixth, Andrew Knizner doubled and Koss singled him home, with Knizner thrown out at the plate by JJ Bleday. Grant McCray struck out. Whitcomb then went deep for 6-2. Garcia finished two innings with three hits, two runs, and two strikeouts.
In the eighth, with the bases loaded and two outs, Whitcomb struck out on a foul tip against Tony Santillan. Pinch-hitter Drew Gilbert doubled in the next at-bat, scoring Turner Hill, McCray, and Knizner for a 9-3 lead.
Whitcomb was charged with a fielding error in the first when Hector Rodriguez reached. Cincinnati did not score in that inning. He later turned a double play with Koss and Devers that ended the second after Jose Trevino's RBI single.
Seven runs after 9-3
Rodriguez opened the ninth with his second homer of the game. Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam off Dylan Smith. Trevino's sacrifice fly tied it. Pinch-hitter Tyler Stephenson singled in the go-ahead run, the AP recap said. Emilio Pagan recorded his 17th save. Santillan (2-4) was the winning pitcher.
