Jung Hoo Lee did not play right field Monday. The Associated Press reported that he served as designated hitter after a late flight home from Boston, a break from his usual outfield work as the San Francisco Giants closed a 1-5 road trip.
He still supplied the first run. ESPN's scoring play has Lee singling to center in the first, Drew Gilbert scoring, Rafael Devers moving to third. CBS Sports lists it as his 47th RBI of the season.
MLB.com wrote that Lee and Devers are the only two players left from San Francisco's Opening Day lineup after Monday's injured-list and bereavement moves. CBS Sports' box has him 1-for-4 as the DH, hitting .288/.324/.424.
Four hits before an out
The Giants opened with four consecutive hits off Chase Burns, the AP said. CBS Sports' play-by-play has Gilbert doubling to deep right-center, Devers singling to right, Lee singling to center, and Turner Hill doubling to deep right. JJ Bleday threw Lee out at the plate on Hill's ball, ESPN's box notes, with Bleday credited an outfield assist.
Burns, who entered 14-2 per NBC Sports Bay Area and left 14-3, was charged with five earned runs in 3.2 innings. MLB.com called it his shortest start of the year. The AP added that two of Burns' three losses this season have come in his last three outings.
Lee lined out to center in the second after Devers' three-run homer had made it 5-0. He grounded out to second in the fifth and flied out to left in the eighth.
Gilbert, who doubled in each of his first two at-bats, told MLB.com the club stuck to a plan against Burns. "He's one of the best pitchers in the league," Gilbert said. "Anytime you've got a guy like that going in, you know it's going to be a battle. I thought we just did a good job sticking to a specific plan."
The AP described a cool night at Oracle Park, with mist over the outfield by the middle innings.
A 5-0 start to the homestand
Devers' homer scored Christian Koss and Gilbert. Carson Whisenhunt left in the third with pain in his pitching elbow and is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday, the AP reported. Jason Foley (1-1) recorded the win after 1.1 innings.
