Witt Jr. drives the offense
Bobby Witt Jr. was the central figure in the Kansas City Royals' 9-5 victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Monday. The Royals, who played at home at Kauffman Stadium before a crowd of 12,438, relied on a potent lineup that included significant contributions from multiple batters.
Witt Jr. scored four times and drove in four runs, including a two-run home run to left-center field that helped extend the lead in the second inning. His performance anchored a strong offensive effort that overwhelmed the Athletics' pitching staff.
Game unfolds with early dominance
The Royals took an early lead in the first inning when Ben McNeil hit a solo home run to right field. The Athletics quickly answered, but Kansas City responded with a three-run rally in the bottom of the first. Garcia singled to right, allowing Witt Jr. to score, and Perez followed with a single to center that scored both Caglianone and Garcia.
The Royals continued to add runs in the second inning with Witt Jr.'s home run, which also scored Isbel. By the end of the third inning, Kansas City had built a substantial lead, scoring one more run on Isbel's single to center.
Bullpen secures the win
The Athletics mounted a late-game effort, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings. White homered to left-center in the fifth, and Serven hit a two-run home run to left. However, the Royals' bullpen held firm to protect the lead.
In the eighth inning, Witt Jr. doubled to left, scoring Jensen, and then scored again on Caglianone's single. The Royals added a final run in the ninth inning when Cortes scored on a groundout. Steven Cruz recorded the save, striking out one batter while allowing no hits or earned runs.
Final records and pitching stats
Michael Wacha earned the win for the Royals, pitching five innings and allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out three. He improved his record to 6-8. Connor Thomas, John Schreiber, and Nate Pearson all recorded holds, with Schreiber and Thomas allowing no earned runs.
For the Athletics, Mason Barnett took the loss, pitching two and two-thirds innings and allowing seven hits and six earned runs while walking four batters. Hayden Juenger, Scott Blewett, and Seth Johnson also pitched for the A's. The Royals improved their record to 52-74, while the Athletics fell to 49-76.
