The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their second preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on August 20 at SoFi Stadium, while training camp continues. A significant concern for the team is the absence of running back Christian McCaffrey, who has been sidelined due to tightness.
NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio has raised questions about whether McCaffrey's absence is truly due to injury or if it is connected to his contract situation. Florio pointed out that recent contract signings for other running backs, such as Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, might have influenced McCaffrey's decision to miss practice.
He noted that McCaffrey, who is 30 years old, is set to earn $12.5 million this season, none of which is guaranteed, and this may be his last opportunity for a significant contract.
Florio emphasized that McCaffrey likely understands his value to the team and may be seeking a contract adjustment. He stated that the veteran running back does not need the additional wear and tear from training camp or preseason games, suggesting that McCaffrey will be ready for the regular season if the 49ers address his contract concerns.
Last season, McCaffrey played a pivotal role for the 49ers, logging 931 snaps and achieving a 78.3 overall PFF grade. He rushed for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns on 311 carries, while also contributing significantly in the passing game with 102 receptions for 924 yards and seven touchdowns.
