Bennett Controls the Mound

Jake Bennett delivered a masterful performance on the mound, securing the victory for the Boston Red Sox with a seven-and-two-thirds-inning outing that stifled the Los Angeles Angels offense. Bennett (3-3) allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters without issuing a walk. His command kept the Angels off balance for the majority of the game, setting the stage for Boston’s offensive surge.

Early Runs Define the Game

The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Duran hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing González to score and make it 1-0. Boston expanded its advantage in the third inning when González singled to right field. The hit drove in both Abreu and Contreras, pushing the score to 3-0. Durbin was left on third base after the play.

The Red Sox added another run later in the third inning. Duran hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, allowing Durbin to score from third. Duran reached first base safely due to an error by Angels first baseman Schanuel, then advanced to second while González moved to third. The scoring play made it 4-0. In the fifth inning, Durbin extended the lead further by homering to left field, a 358-foot shot that made the score 5-0.

Angels Rally Late, Fall Short

The Angels attempted a comeback in the eighth inning. Siri homered to right center, a 408-foot blast, to cut the deficit to 5-1. Shortly after, Neto singled to right field, allowing Lowe to score and make it 5-2. Despite the late innings rally, the Angels could not overcome the early deficit.

Pitching Support and Final Notes

Garrett Whitlock pitched the eighth inning for the save opportunity, throwing a scoreless frame with no hits or walks. Aroldis Chapman closed out the game in the ninth, pitching a perfect inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout. Chapman earned the save, his 17th of the season.

For the Angels, Reid Detmers took the loss, pitching five innings with five hits and five earned runs allowed while striking out five. Jose Fermin, Mitch Farris, and Kirby Yates pitched the final four innings, combining to allow no earned runs. The game drew an attendance of 43,747 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The Red Sox improved to 38-48, while the Angels fell to 36-53.
