Christian McCaffrey, running back for the San Francisco 49ers, has been absent from practice for more than a week due to reported "tightness," leading to speculation that he may be engaging in a "hold-in" as he seeks a new contract.
According to Mike Florio, McCaffrey could be limiting his practice time in an effort to negotiate better terms on his current deal, which is set to pay him a non-guaranteed $12.5 million in 2026.
The situation is further complicated by recent record-breaking contract extensions for players like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, which may have influenced McCaffrey's desire for a raise. At 30 years old, McCaffrey is entering a phase in his career where performance may decline, prompting concerns about extending his contract at a high value.
While McCaffrey holds leverage as the team's primary running back, the 49ers face a dilemma. If they proceed with rookie players Kaelon Black and Jordan James as their top options at the position, the team could struggle significantly. Analysts suggest that the 49ers should consider only guaranteeing the remaining money on McCaffrey's contract instead of extending it further.
There are concerns that if McCaffrey sustains an injury this season, the team could cut him without consequences afterward. As he seeks additional security, including potentially extending his contract with a raise, the 49ers may find themselves in a tough position. While guaranteeing his current deal could be a reasonable compromise, extending it further may not be advisable given the risks involved.
