Undrafted rookie offensive lineman Jacob Spomer made a significant impression during the Chargers' Week 1 preseason game. His performance earned him notable recognition from Pro Football Focus, where he was named to the Rookie Team of the Week and received the second-highest grade among rookie interior linemen with an overall score of 82.0.
Spomer, who played the entire game, did not allow any pressures in pass protection and achieved an elite run-blocking grade of 90.0 on 16 outside-zone rushing attempts. This strong showing has the potential to attract attention from NFL coaches, including Jim Harbaugh.
At 25 years old, Spomer faces stiff competition for a spot on the Chargers' roster due to the team's depth at the interior line position. However, he may still have a chance to secure a place on the practice squad if the team opts for that route. Throughout training camp, he has been taking third-team reps behind Tyler Biadasz and fellow rookie Jake Slaughter.
Spomer previously played college football at Fresno State, where he was recognized as a First-Team All-Mountain West selection and was the highest-rated center in the conference according to Pro Football Focus. He still has several opportunities in upcoming games to further demonstrate his capabilities and solidify his position on the team.
